Understanding Interagency Connections
Planning for life after high school is a team effort. Schools, families, students, and outside agencies can each bring important knowledge, resources, and support to the transition process. When agencies are involved early, they can help students explore opportunities, build skills, and connect with supports that may continue after graduation.
An agency is an organization or person outside of the school that provides services, resources, or support to help a student prepare for and move into adult life. Agencies can help students build skills, explore opportunities, and access supports that may continue after high school.Think of an agency as a partner on the student's support squad.
Every student is different, so the right agency is the one that matches the student's individual strengths, preferences, interests, and needs. Some students may need support with employment, while others may benefit from assistance with postsecondary education, independent living, transportation, community participation, or accessing adult services.
Families and educators do not have to navigate this process alone. Working together with potential agencies can help everyone understand what services are available, who qualifies, and how an agency can support the student's transition goals. The goal is not simply to involve an agency—it is to find the right partner who can help the student move toward greater independence and a meaningful life after high school.
